Charred Wood Fences

One of our core activities is the production of charred wood for fencing. We have extensive experience, and every board is processed with meticulous attention to detail. To achieve the highest-quality fence boards, we combine modern technology with the centuries-old Japanese wood-burning technique known as Shou Sugi Ban. In recent years, it has become increasingly popular worldwide among people looking for unconventional, eco-friendly, and natural products. Therefore, if you are seeking a long-lasting, sustainable, natural, and low-maintenance solution for your fence, our products are the perfect choice.

What is the 'SHOU SUGI BAN' technology?

In short, it is a traditional Japanese method of wood charring, also known in Japan as Yakisugi. The wood is first exposed to fire at a controlled temperature, then left to cool. After cooling, the charred layer is brushed off with special brushes, and finally, the surface is coated with natural oils and finished in the shade of your choice.

The Origin of “Shou Sugi Ban” or “Yakisugi”

Even if you haven’t heard these terms before, you have most likely seen photos of Yakisugi cladding. In the Western world, the process of treating wood this way is referred to as Shou Sugi Ban. The name became popular due to a mistranslation of the original Japanese term, which is why both names appear in various sources—though they describe the same technique, meaning “charred cedar” in Japanese.

Traditionally, cedar was used in the East, but as the technique evolved, other wood species became suitable as well. In our region, the most popular choices are larch, spruce, and pine.

This ingenious method dates back centuries and is believed to have originated around the 18th century. The technique creates a beautifully charred surface that highlights the natural wood grain. The texture and depth of the surface can be adjusted by choosing different wood species or varying the degree of charring.

Although it may seem counterintuitive, the charring process actually makes the wood stronger and more durable. In Japan, this technique was used even before paints or oils became common for protecting exterior cladding.

Advantages of Charred Wood Fences

  • Fire Resistance. Charred wood ignites more slowly than untreated boards, making it a safer option.
  • Aesthetics. The appearance of the boards changes—they darken, the grain becomes more pronounced, and the result looks more elegant and luxurious.
  • Low Maintenance. When used outdoors, charred wood boards do not require annual maintenance. After 6–8 years, a single coat of oil is recommended.
  • Protection Against Pests. The burning process destroys harmful organisms within the wood, such as fungi and insects. It also burns away the natural sugars, making the wood “unappealing” to pests.
  • Longevity. The boards become more durable, stronger, and resistant to weather conditions, moisture, UV rays, mold, and fungi, ensuring a much longer lifespan.

How Are Charred Wood Fence Boards Made?

  1. In our facility, we use premium-quality Scandinavian spruce, pine, or larch that is fully dried.
  2. We char boards of the required dimensions at high temperatures using specialized machinery. This step gives the wood a rich tone and enhances its texture.
  3. Once the wood has cooled, we brush off the charred layer with special brushes. This stage reveals a distinctive and unique grain pattern.
  4. We carefully remove all remaining dust and debris.
  5. The final step is applying natural oils and finishing the boards in the shade of your choice.

Is It Worth Choosing Charred Wood Boards for Your Fence?

A fence marks the boundary between your home and the outside world—it protects your privacy and your property. To feel truly secure, the fence must be durable, visually pleasing, and long-lasting.

By choosing our charred wood boards, you can be confident that the wood will be stronger, more resilient, and capable of withstanding various weather conditions. No termites or insects will inhabit the boards. For many years, your fence will retain its deep color, distinctive pattern, and require almost no maintenance.

Maintenance of Charred Wood Fences

If you choose our charred wood for your fence, we have good news—the maintenance is exceptionally simple. You can wash the boards with water without worrying about damaging them. Only after more than 5 years should you consider applying a single coat of oil if you want to maintain the original shade.

The boards require no additional care for 5–10 years. After that, one coat of oil is sufficient. When properly maintained, this type of product can last up to 80 years.
